Manchester United avoided the big names after they were drawn in Group B with PSV Eindhoven, CSKA Moscow and Wolfsburg.
United winger Memphis Depay will get to visit the Dutch champions PSV, who sold him in the summer, thanks to a relatively forgiving draw including a trip to Moscow, the scene of their 2008 Champions League triumph over Chelsea on penalties.
Manchester City were drawn into group D with Juventus, Sevilla and Borussia Monchengladbach.
It’s another potential group of death for City, with the only upside being no long trips to Moscow, Kiev or Kazakhstan although they have avoided repeats of recent encounters with Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
City captain Vincent Kompany commented on Twitter: “Good games against great teams, happy with that.”
Yaya Toure also took to Twitter, saying: “Looking forward to the Champions League!! A fantastic competition we are all hungry for success in.”
City could be strengthened by the £54m signing of Wolfsburg player Kevin De Bruyne by the weekend with final details being ironed out tonight although there may be a little irony at work as De Bruyne’s departure might make United’s group that bit easier than it already looks.
