MAN UNITED U21 4, MAN CITY U21 0
Goals from James Wilson, Adnan Januzaj, Ashley Fletcher and Matthew Willock gave Manchester United under-21s a resounding victory in the mini derby at Old Trafford.
Striker Fletcher and wide man Januzaj, who have featured in the Reds’ first team, provided the class and quality that City lacked in the Barclays Under-21 Premier League fixture as they scored the first two goals for the Reds.
Then it was the turn of substitutes Ashley Fletcher and Matthew Willock to have their moment of glory as they, too, got on to the scoresheet late in the game.
And it was great for the 16,708 fans who took advantage of the free admission – it took United by surprise as they had to open more sections of the ground after kick off to accommodate them.
The match was barely five minutes old when Wilson sprang the offside trap and finished superbly with a well-executed low shot.
Wilson eluded the offside trap for a second time in the first half, only this time to see his chip rolled just wide of the upright.
United keeper Joel Pereira made a couple of decent saves on the opening period to deny Ashley Smith-Brown and Kean Bryan.
Januzaj doubled United’s lead eight minutes into the second period as he cut in and curled a shot low to the left of keeper Angus Gunn from the edge of the box.
And the victory was sealed in the 79th minute when Wilson provided the assist with a cross for Fletcher to convert.
There was the added gloss of a fourth goal when Willock fired an angled shot which went in off the upright.
