MANCHESTER CITY U19 1, SCHALKE 04 1
(City won 3-1 on penalties)
Manchester City may have lost to Barcelona in the Champions League, but there was Euro joy for their under-19s.
City defeated German side Schalke 04 in the round of 16 in the UEFA Youth League – it is played with a Champions League format – hours before the senior side was in action.
It was an afternoon of high drama as City only emerged victors after a penalty shootout. Yes, the Germans can lose on spot kicks, albeit not very often!
Schalke made the brighter start wasting three clear-cut chances before City stole ahead in the 33rd minute through a long-range drive from Jack Byrne which keeper Janik Schilder could only palm into his own net.
City had chances to seal victory as Brandon Barker struck an upright and Jose Pozo had a shot well saved.
And they looked like being costly misses when Schalke substitute Christian Sivodedov equalised in stoppage time after City failed to clear a long forward pass.
The match immediately went to penalties with Schalke making an unholy mess missing three out of four as one struck the bar and two others were saved.
City converted three of their four with Angelino the only failure as Byrne, Bersant Celina and Pozo all converted as City won through to the last eight.
