MAN CITY UNDER-19 5, SCHALKE O4 1
Manchester City under-19 elite development squad made a whirlwind start as they maintained their 100-per-cent record in the Premier League International Cup with victory against top German side Schalke 04.
Three goals inside the opening 22 minutes in the first official match at the Academy Stadium laid the foundation for a second successive game in a group which also includes Benfica and Leicester City.
City made the breakthrough in the seventh minute through a flying header from Thierry Ambrose from an Olivier Ntcham cross.
They quickly doubled their advantage after a slick passing move which ended when Jose Pozo square the ball for Ntcham to slot home.
And it got even better when City added a third goal when Brandon Barker fired home from a tight angle as he latched on to a right-wing cross from Ambrose.
There was a touch of complacency as Schalke pulled a goal back late on the half when a 25-yard drive from Jones Nutfild was only parried by keeper Angus Gunn and Pascale Tadaski was the quickest to react as he fired home from a narrow angle.
City added a fourth goal just after the hour when Barker squared a pass for Jack Byrne to find the net with a low drive from the edge of the box.
Substitute Jordy Hiwula was denied by a great block by keeper Beind Schipmann in the last minute.
But deep into stoppage time City added a fifth goal when man-of-the-match Ambrose squared a cross from the by-line and Hiwula to slid the ball into the net from virtually on the goalline to round off a perfect afternoon.
