Oldham Athletic crashed out of the Capital One Cup following a 3-0 home defeat by Middlesbrough.
The Championship club was far too strong and classy for Latics who saw their hopes of a lucrative run quickly end following their first-round exit.
There could be no complaints as Latics were outplayed, outfought and outmanoeuvred by their opponents who were emphatic victors.
It was all change as Latics’ manager Lee Johnson made five from Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Colchester United in their first league fixture.
Timothee Dieng, new-signing George Elokobi, Danny Philliskirk, David Mellor and William Gros all won call ups at the expense of the injured Mike Jones while Carl Winchester, Genseric Kusunga, Jonathan Forte and James Dayton all stepped down to the bench.
It was no surprise when Boro went ahead after half an hour through a spectacular strike from Luke Williams who found the top corner with a drive from 25 yards.
Mellor and Gros made way for Winchester and Dayton at the break as Latics looked for a foothold back into the cup tie.
But early in the second period Boro doubled their advantage when the ball was cut back to Grant Leadbitter who drilled home a low shot from 12 yards.
Spanish substitute Kiki piled on the agony scoring a third goal for Boro, his second in as many games for the team from Teesside.
It was a disappointing night, especially as the game captured the imagination of the public of Oldham as there was a crowd of over 4,300 which was far more than expected, though they left disappointed and downbeat as Latics bowed out of the cup with little more than a whimper.
