Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling has been called up to replace Manchester United’s Tom Cleverley who sustained a calf injury in training on Thursday and missed England’s 4-1 win over Montenegro at Wembley.
Hodgson had hinted after the Montenegro game that he would consider calling up a replacement midfielder from the U21 squad if required and selected 18 year old winger Sterling for squad for the must-win game against Poland at Wembley on Tuesday.
Sterling had helped Gareth Southgate’s U21 side win 4-0 over San Marino on Thursday.
Full-back Kyle Walker picked up a suspension after he was booked against Montenegro and will be unavailable for the Poland game.
It is expected that United’s Phil Jones or Chris Smalling could deputise at right back.
