Ryan Giggs reached a Champions League landmark when he came on as a substitute for Marouane Fellaini in Manchester United’s away tie against Shaktar Donetsk at the Donbass Arena tonight.
The Welsh winger recorded his 145th appearance, beating Spanish striker Raul’s record in all Champions League games including qualifiers.
Giggs was proud of his achievement but was disappointed that United could only secure a point in Ukraine.
“It means a lot.” he said, “It’s the pinnacle of European football and to play that many games i obviously special.
“When you play for United and you go 1-0 ahead you expect to be able to see the game out.
“Fair play to Shakhtar – they’ve got some decent players and they put us under a lot of pressure.
“We’ve won our first game and and drew a very tough away game so we’ll take that.
“Hopefully we can get a few victories from our next couple of games and that’ll put us in a good position.”
Danny Welbeck’s early opener was cancelled out by Shakhtar’s Brazilian forward Taison although Robin Van Persie’s second half effort was blocked by Yaroslav Rakitskiy.
Taison could have snatched a winner in a game of few chances when his fierce shot took a wicked deflection that almost caught out David De Gea.
United now face a double header against Real Sociedad who are bottom of the group following defeats by Shakhtar and Bayer Leverkusen.
