Manchester United duo Wayne Rooney and Phil Jones will miss England’s crucial World Cup 2014 qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine along with Liverpool’s Glen Johnson.
Rooney suffered a gashed head in training ahead of United’s game against Liverpool at Anfield today while team mate Jones came off with an ankle problem during the first half of the game.
Liverpool’s Glen Johnson was also withdrawn during the game nursing an injured ankle in the second half.
Cardiff City’s Steven Caulker, 21, was called up to the senior squad as a replacement and England manager Roy Hodgson will be praying that there are no further withdrawals this week.
England play Moldova at Wembley on Friday and then travel to Ukraine on the following Tuesday.
Manchester United manager David Moyes reported that 27-year-old Rooney would be out for several weeks.
“He’s got a cut down the middle of his forehead. I would think he’s got no chance of playing for England.”
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers revealed that match-winner Daniel Sturridge had been ‘hindered’ by a thigh injury but was hopeful that the young striker would be available for the qualifiers.
“He has struggled in the last couple of games and we need to think of Liverpool first.” said Rodgers.
