Chelsea have reportedly had a bid for Wayne Rooney turned down by Manchester United.
Several media outlets suggested that the bid consisted of £10m cash plus either Juan Mata or David Luiz but Jose Mourinho claimed that the offer was purely cash and that Rooney was Chelsea’s only summer transfer target.
“Chelsea is interested in this player, made a bid and what we did we did officially.” Mourinho said.
“Now we have nothing more to say, we want the player, we made the bid and now it is up to Man United.
“We don’t want to make public the bid but it is just a certain amount of money and it doesn’t involve players or players in the possibility of negotiation. No Juan Mata, no David Luiz.”
“I trust my players and I am happy with them and in this bid I want to be respectful.” he added.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has also made clear his admiration of the England striker and this opening offer from Stamford Bridge appears to be the beginning of the end of a nine year Old Trafford career for Rooney after repeated reports of his dissatisfaction at being labelled a squad player by new United manager David Moyes.
