Manchester United have been dealt a new central defensive injury blow.
Nemanja Vidic has undergone surgery to his right knee which is expected to keep him out of action for around eight weeks.
Sir Alex Ferguson rested Vidic for Sunday’s Premier League match against Liverpool as a precautionary measure after the Serb complained of tightness in his knee.
Further tests discovered an underlying problem and he underwent surgery this week.
United are already without central defenders Phil Jones and Chris Smalling who both have long-term injuries.
