A nasty collision with Fulham’s Hugo Rodallega left Wayne Rooney nursing a deep gash in his knee and gave England manager Roy Hodgson an injury headache he didn’t need ahead of World Cup qualifying games against Moldova and Ukraine on September 7th and 11th respectively.
Rooney, who had only come off the substitutes bench in the 68th minute, was taken off and Sir Alex Ferguson later confirmed that Rooney would be missing for at least four weeks.
“I didn’t see it. He was whisked off to hospital immediately.” said Sir Alex.
“He’ll be out for maybe four weeks.” he continued.
United had earlier bounced back from their shock defeat at Everton by overcoming Damien Duff’s 3rd minute opening goal with three first half strikes from Robin Van Persie, Shinji Kagawa, and Rafael but a bizarre second half own goal by Nemanja Vidic meant a jittery finish for the Reds and the graphic-looking injury to Rooney.
