Wayne Rooney and Tom Cleverley have been ruled out the England squad to face Holland this Wednesday due to injury.
Rooney has still not recovered from the throat infection that kept him out of yesterday’s 2-1 win over Norwich City and the Europa League defeat against Ajax last Thursday.
Tom Cleverley was replaced by Paul Scholes after 61 minutes at Old Trafford against Ajax and has a foot injury.
Cleverley expressed his disappointment on Twitter, saying:
“Very disappointed not to be joining up with the England squad”
England manager Stuart Pearce has already had to contend with a raft of injuries in the build-up to the game at Wembley. Tottenham’s Kyle Walker because the latest to pull out while Aston Villa’s Darren Bent sustained a foot injury on Saturday.
Pearce may call up late replacements but it seems certain that England could be going into the Holland game with an inexperienced front line perhaps comprising Chelsea’s Daniel Sturridge and United’s Danny Welbeck in the absence of Rooney and Bent.
